Hardwood or Solid Wood

- Can be expensive
- Can be damaged by water, can be saved if water issues are addressed in a timely manner.
Engineered Wood
- More affordable than solid woods
- Large selection of wood species and colors
- Floating or glue application
- Softer feel when walked on if floated and underlayment padding is used
- Exact same look as hardwood floors
- More dimensionally stable than wood due to construction
- Wider range of humidity tolerances than solids
- Easy to replace planks if you have leftover planks
- Easer to damage due to flooding
- Most cases will need to be replaced if it floods
- Not able to refinish most engineered floors due to thin hardwood veneers. There are exceptions.
Laminate
- Budget friendly
- Better design and durability than older laminate
- Softer feel when walked on if underlayment padding is used
- Large selection of wood species looks, stone or tile looks and colors to choose from
- Extreme scratch resistance, pet friendly when it comes to scratching
- Floating
- Easy to clean and maintain
- Replacement cost lower because floors are not mechanically fastened to subfloor
- Some laminates are treated to repel water and have waterproof locking systems
- Easily damaged by prolonged standing water, floods or pet urine.
Luxurious Vinyl Plank & Tile
- Budget friendly
- Very large selection to choose from wood look, tile or stone looks as well as colors
- Higher end products have a very realistic wood look and feel
- Glue down application, a few attached pad options for sound dampening and softer feel
- Easy to maintain and clean
- Easy to repair if you have leftover planks
- Good wear and scratch resistance, dependent on the thickness of the wear layer
- Waterproof but glue can be damaged with repeated flooding or long term water exposure
- Will expand and contract in extreme temperature fluctuations.
Sheet Vinyl
- Budget friendly
- Very large selection to choose from wood look, tile or stone looks as well as colors
- Glue down application
- Easy to maintain and clean
- Waterproof but glue can be damaged with repeated flooding or long term water exposure under the flooring
- Good sound dampening properties due to backing material
- Can rip, tear or dent
- Repairable if you have leftover material.
WPC or SPC Click Plank
- Relatively new technology, lots of option
- Affordable, wide price range, budget low end to high end
- Lots of looks to choose from wood, tile or stone as well as colors
- Higher end products look identical to real wood and have similar textures as well
- Waterproof
- Floating instillation with attached pad options or foam underlayment. Can be glued down in some applications
- Good sound dampening if product has attached pad
- Easy to maintain and clean
- Dense core is less susceptible to expansion and contraction from temperature changes and moisture fluctuations
- Good wear and scratch resistance, dependent on the thickness of the wear layer
- Replacement cost is lower due to not being mechanically fastened to subfloor
- Softer feel if flooring has attached pad or foam underlayment
- Must be removed if water is trapped under it.
- Can be removed and relayed in some cases due to flooding.
Ceramic and Porcelain Tile
- Affordable
- Both are very similar, Porcelain is a little more dense and durable, both are good choices
- Lots of looks, textures and colors to choose from
- Lots of tile sizes to choose from
- Can get very creative, mix and match, borders and patterns, unique looks
- New technology can produce tile to look like wood, marble, granite, travertine, slate and other natural stone looks.
- Waterproof
- Durable, scratch resistant
- Low-maintenance, easy to clean
- Can crack or break, susceptible to foundation shift
- Easy to replace tiles.
Natural Stone
- Mid to high prices
- Lots of natural stones to choose from, marble, limestone, granite, slate, travertine, quartz, sandstone
- More expensive and elegant look
- Lots of looks, textures and colors to choose from
- Lots of size and thickness options
- Unique floors, no 2 tiles are the same
- Easy to maintain
- Natural look
- Some stone needs to be sealed to be waterproof, some stones are naturally porous
- Will not crack as easy as ceramic or porcelain if you have minor foundation issues
- Easy to replace tiles
- Shinny stone tiles can be damaged by acidic spills like wine and vinegar, granite and marble mostly. Spills must be addressed quickly.
